Lesson 5 - Teaching Islam to Children

Teacher speaking: Children, today we will study Maria the Coptic, a concubine of Muhammad (pbuh). You will answer the questions at the end of our discussion.

Student’s Question: "I have heard that the Prophet (sws) was gifted a slave girl Maria by the monarch of Egypt. If this is correct, why did not the Prophet (sws) free her and then marry her? Why did he keep her as his slave? "– source

Teacher speaking: "Islam adopted a gradual way to eradicate the evil institution of slavery, which was deeply rooted in the Arabian society. During the interim period people were allowed to keep slave women and sleep with them This was the very reason that Maria the Coptic slave lady was not necessarily set free, since keeping slave women was totally allowed in the interim period. Freeing her, of course, would have hurt the Egyptian king and marrying her would have increased the Prophet’s responsibilities; secondly, an example needed to be set as to how Muslims should treat their slave girls -- who in those times were treated very badly. Moreover, it is clear from the Quran (33:49-52) that the Prophet (sws) could only free and marry slave girls who were made prisoners in war. He was not allowed to marry gifted slave women that had been set free." – source

Question 1 -- Was the term " the evil institution of slavery " ever used by Muhammad, and can you find the term in the Quran?

Question 2 -- The notorius Ku Klux Klan (KKK) believes that it is righteous and ethical to keep and to sleep with slave women. Are they following the example set by Muhammad?

Question 3 -- Why did the the interim period last thirteen centuries for Saudi Arabia -- the very heart and soul of Islam? Saudi Arabia abolished slavery in 1962.

Question 4 -- Freeing Maria " would have hurt the Egyptian king." Rate the pain of Egyptian King from 1 to 10. For a 10 rating the king committed suicide for losing Maria, while a 1 rating the king said, "Who is Maria?"

Question 5 -- Explain in a short essay the biological differences among a gifted slave woman, a slave girl who were made prisoners in war, and a free girl.

Teacher speaking: Because Maria never became a Muslim even though she was very close to the holy Prophet, the perfect human; she is now suffering eternal damnation.
