Muhammad said that the majority of people in Hell will be women because they are ungrateful and harsh towards their husbands.[1]

There are nearly 500 verses (roughly one out of every twelve) in the Qur'an which speak of Hell.[2]

[edit] The Reason for Being

Hell (جهنم Jahannam) was specifically created and prepared with eternal fire by Allah, so that he could torture disbelievers (Qur'an 3:31). In fact, disbelievers are the fuel of Allah's fire (Qur'an 3:10). Hell is the means of Allah's punishment by which he punishes those of his servants whom he wishes (Sahih Bukhari 6:60:373). Punishment varies according to a person's deeds (Qur'an 6:132 & Qur'an 3:162-163). Hell has seven gates for seven classes of sinners (Qur'an 15:43-44), and angels are appointed as hell's overseers (Qur'an 66:6 & Qur'an 74:30-31). The torture will be so terrible that people will plead for destruction (Qur'an 25:11-14).

  1. Blazing fire (Qur'an 33:64-65)
  2. Exchangeable skins so that people can be roasted all over again (Qur'an 4:56)
  3. Binding chains (Qur'an 25:11-14)
  4. Binding yokes (Qur'an 73:12)
  5. Boiling water (Qur'an 56:41-42)
  6. Filthy fluid of pus and blood (Qur'an 38:57-58)
  7. Garments of liquid pitch (Qur'an 14:49-50) and fire (Qur'an 22:19)
  8. Maces of iron (Qur'an 22:21-22)
  9. The easiest punishments are burning embers beneath the arches of the feet (Sahih Bukhari 8:76:566) or shoes of fire (Sahih Muslim 1:412) that will cause one's brain to boil.
  10. Painful, noxious, choking foods (Qur'an 88:6-7), (Qur'an 44:43-46), (Qur'an 37:62-67) & (Qur'an 73:12-13).
  11. Intestines will come out (Sahih Bukhari 4:54:489)

...When Allah would finish judging His bondsmen and because of His mercy decide to take out of Hell such people as He pleases. He would command the angels to bring out those who had not associated anything with Allah; to whom Allah decided to show mercy. those who would say: There is no god but Allah. They (the angels) would recognise them in the Fire by the marks of prostration, for Hell-fire will devour everything (limb) of the sons of Adam except the marks of prostration. Allah has forbidden the fire to consume the marks of prostration. They will be taken out of the Fire having been burnt, and the water of life would be poured over them, and they will sprout as seed does In the silt carried by flood...

Since Muhammad was guilty of murder and transgressing of limits then it looks like Dante Alighieri was right and Muhammad will probably spend some time in hell, too.

[edit] Why It Makes Allah a Sadist

A sadist is someone who derives pleasure from causing pain to others.[3][4][5] If Allah is omniscient (all-knowing) as he claims to be (Qur'an 34:1-3), then that means Allah always knew which humans would fail his tests and end up in hell. The only possible reason any omniscient, omnipotent deity would physically torture human beings for all eternity is because he enjoys it. Since hell's occupants will never be able to repent and end the torture by mending their ways (Qur'an 43:77, Qur'an 35:37, Qur'an 23:106-108 & Qur'an 67:6-11), then hell's only purpose is to torture. Since the torture is not being used for any constructive purpose (like teaching a lesson since the victims will never be given a chance to apply the lesson), the only logical explanation for it would be that Allah wants to torture humans.
