Talk:Muslims who left Islam
From WikiIslam
Salman Rushdie
I was surprised to see Sir Ahmad Salman Rushdie listed under those who have gone away from Islam. First, when was he ever a practicing Muslim? e.g. Which Mosque did he attend and for how long? What was his Islamic upbringing etc?
Then, we find he has taken the name Sir Ahmad which hardly suggests he has gone away from Islam.
After he wrote The Satanic Verses, and at the insistence of the British government, a delegation from Regents Park Mosque met with him and invited him back into the fold of Islam. he said the Shahadah, but refused to write a novel against Satanic Verses (undo the harm) and refused to give the profits from the sale of the book to charity.
Then, sometime later he went to the US and while delivering a speech on a campus he announced he was bringing The Satanic Verses out as a paperback. This hardly gives the impression he was sincere in his discussions with the Regents Park delegation.
So, to conclude, how can he be listed as one of those who has gone away from Islam when, as is most likely, he never was a practicing Muslim?

- One doesnt need to be a "practicing" muslim in order to be considered a Muslim. Thats a superficial requirement. Also wikipedia lists him as a former muslim and they say "Rushdie came from a Sunni Muslim family but says that he was never really religious". He was born into a Sunni muslim family. Thats good enough. --Whale 07:20, 27 October 2008 (PDT)
